Goritsy

We arrived Goritsy which is a small town with the Nunnery of the Resurrection and the Kirillo-Belozsersky Monastery. Our tour skipped the Nunnery and went to the monastery which was founded in 1397.

The monastery was supported over the years by various Tsars including Ivan IV (the Terrible) who funded a fort wall. The buildings contained icon art and examples of the needlework done at the nunnery..

On the way back from the Monastery the guide (Ludmila) pointed out most of the houses had vegetable gardens. I noticed that this was true of almost all places we had seen so far that the yards were not used for aesthetic reasons but rather functional reasons such as vegetable gardening. She indicated that most people had to grow food. She also mentioned that in July, they had two frosts which is not uncommon. She also said that picking mushrooms to sell is a popular thing to do and there are over 200 varieties of mushrooms, 40 of them you can eat regular and the rest you can eat just once in a lifetime. Cranberries is another crop that is picked and sold.

There was an area for shopping where we got off and got on the boat. I snapped a few shots of the goods intended for the locals. You can see fish, bottled mushrooms, and cranberries.
