Lake Louise, Canada

May 17th-18th, 2024

I had read that Lake Louise is probably the most photographed lake in Canada – I can see why.  the majority of the lake is surrounded by snowcapped mountains and glaciers. Due to the elevation, the lake does not thaw out until June.  I would love to come back and see it in the summer and I would love to come back and see it in the winter when you can go ice skating on it.

The Chateau Fairmont, our hotel, was the only hotel on the lake. The hotel has an elegant and old feel. The restaurant with large arched windows looking out on to the lake. The hotel has a very interesting history that started back in 1890.  It became a popular filming location and Hollywood hotspot.  John Barrymore, Betty Grable, Carmen Miranda, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Alfred Hitchcock, Marilyn Monroe, and Superman himself, Christopher Reeve passed through its doors.

When I inquired about the town and what there was to do, I was told that there was not much of a town, a gas station, grocery story and a few hotels with restaurants.   This was a place to hike, relax, and eat.

When we arrived, we weren’t all that hungry, we went to their lounge and ordered nachos.  I was surprised that Sophon wanted the “Half Bake Sheet Nachos” after he said he wasn’t that hungry.  When the nachos arrived, he finally realized that half bake sheet is what we call a half sheet pan, we didn’t finish them!

The following morning, I noticed that early in the morning, there weren’t too many people around the lake but as the day went on, tour buses showed up and there were hundreds of people visiting at any given point.  When we went outside, it was freezing cold and I mean that literally.  We were wearing sweaters, winter coats, hats and scarves.  I noticed a couple of girls who were wearing very light and skimpy summer dresses for their Instagram photos.  I also noticed that at the more popular vantage points, people didn’t take just a picture and let someone else have their turn, they were doing a full modeling shoot with turning from one side to the next, making different faces, jumping.

We hiked to the other end of the lake that morning and then headed to lunch when we got back.  This was a very relaxing stop and I spent most of my time enjoying nature.
