Chopstix and Cocktails at the Modern

IMG_1646September 11, 2015

After an afternoon at the beach, it was a short walk over the Modern Hotel for the Chopsitx and Cocktails.  I loved it, Susan Faulkner was someone who I had seen on TV over the years.  I was finally glad to see her in person and to try her food.  The are a lot of celebrity chefs that come from all over the world.  It is always fun to see them and more importantly, try there food.  Although the chefs come from all over, all of the food served is locally sourced.  With Hawaii as the backdrop, it makes for a great evening.  There was no shortage of food, wine and cocktails – all of it very good.

I left that night feeling very full – maybe a little bit too full.  Then again, there wasn’t a night I didn’t go home wondering if I hadn’t eaten just a little too much.  When the food is that good, it is hard to eat less of it.

Besides spotting famous chefs, we also spotted Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Parks from Hawaii Five O.  I have to admit, I don’t watch that show but I loved her in Battlestar Galatica and him in Lost. Continue reading

Hawaii Food and Wine Festival 2015

IMG_1635September 9, 2015

Off to Honolulu for the Hawaii for the Hawaii Food and Wine Festival.  I attended the event last year and liked it so much that I decided to go again this year.  Unfortunately, things got off to a bumpy start.  Somewhere between Los Angeles TSA and the National Car Rental desk in Honolulu, I lost my driver’s license.  That also meant that I was not going to be able to rent a car and it was going to make checking into the hotel as well as my return trip back to Los Angeles a little more challenges.

As we boarded our taxi, I reminded myself that I had always wanted to try Uber.   Checking into the hotel wasn’t difficult and as we unpacked Sophon asked me where his backpack was.  I knew immediately, in the back of the taxi that we just got out of.  Where was that piece of paper they handed me as I got in the taxi? If I knew we were going to lose something, I would have lost the piece of paper.

I hate losing things – i absolutely hate it, I could hear that adult voice in my head saying “If you had been more careful…….”   Off to the front desk, a lot of phone calls while wondering if we were going to see the backpack and Macbook that was in it ever again.  Fortunately, the driver dropped it off at our hotel later in the evening.

The following morning, Cindy, Sophon and I  headed to the Koko Head Cafe’, Top Chef Lee Anne Wong’s restaurant.  It was the start of indulgence in Hawaii.  The three of us ordered enough for five people.  This was one serious brunch menu and everything sounded great.  We weren’t disappointed, everything was great. I commented that if I lived in Hawaii, I would probably be there too often and that would not be good thing.  Everything was very good.

Mid-way through a meal, an elderly Japanese couple sat down next to us.  She pointed over to Cindy’s Volcano eggs and said that is what she wanted.  Little did we know, we would run into the Japanese couple at the Hyatt while waiting for the brunch event, only to realize not only had we sat next to them at the KoKo head cafe, but we had sat next to them at the exact same event the year before.  What a small world!

After Breakfast was over, it was time to go back to the hotel.  I decided that it was time to try Uber.  I have a lot of friends that swear by it.   I know all the arguments against Uber and I am not sure I agree with any of them.  I have noticed a wide price range for the same company to take me the same airport at the same time of day.  Clearly, not all meters are equal.  How many times have I scheduled a pick up and they don’t show up?  How many times have I been asked for directions while the gps hangs on the windshield?  How many times when I go to pay for the taxi have I been told that the credit card machine is broken and the driver cannot make change?  How many times have I had to listen to an annoying LCD screen play infomercials my entire trip and when the credit card machine works, it asks if I would like to tip 20%, 25% or 30%.  Since when a tip a third of the service?  Uber was a dream, I pressed a button saying I needed a ride, the car showed up and google maps gave us the directions to my destination.  I was dropped off the driver pushed “End”,  my credit card was charged.  No tip no haggling, no awkward moments.  I like Uber!

Heading home

My Hotel taken from Michael's apartment

My Hotel taken from Michael’s apartment

July 7th, 2015

I had dinner with Michael at a place next door to the hotel overlooking the Marina.  I met Michael while I was working at Transamerica close to 20 years ago.  Who would have thought that 20 years later we would be having dinner together in Singapore, with me on a business trip and he having moved there. It is a reminder that life is rarely predictable, this is one of the those moments that is a pleasant surprise and all I wish I could savior the moment for a little while longer.

I have had a great trip and it started almost three weeks ago but I have to say that I am ready to go home. There were a lot of late night flights, early mornings , meetings during the day while trying to keep with email at night.  I saw a lot, I did a lot and ans as much as I loved it, it  is time to go back home and I am ready!

Peking Duck

Jul 6th, 2015

I went out with the team here in Singapore to have a Duck Lunch.  I have been to this same restaurant before and it was just as good the first time I went.  The bring the finished duck out and present it (with head) and then carve it there at the table.  They ask you what you want to do with the remain duck – noodles or rice and come back a little bit later with a rice or noodle dish.  I love Peeking duck!

Dim Sum

July 5th 2015

I got some sleep the night before so I woke up feeling great.  I headed out to meet my friend Michael and we went to the Mandarin Hotel for Dim Sum.  This wasn’t just any Dim Sum, this was high-end Dim Sum.  It was good, better than anything I had.

We then took a boat tour up the river.  The weather was beautiful, not too hot.  After finishing the boat tour, we walked for a while and stopped for a few beers then headed out to “Fair Price”  I love going to a grocery store in foreign countries.

What a great day!

Singapore Fireworks

IMG_1580July 4th, 2015

When we changed the dates of the trip, I was a little bummed that I was not going to be in town for Independence Day.  I love the 4th of July, when I was growing up in the northeast, I loved the summer (although they were very short) and July 4th was the first summer holiday.  BBQs were about BBQ chicken, hot dogs, burgers, potato salad, baked beans and red white and blue Jello.  It was a tradition to cook the meat on the grill and to eat the entire meal outside.

The day always ended with going to see fireworks.  Where I grew up, it wasn’t always a show but rather a few people setting off a few fireworks they had purchased in a state where the sale of fireworks were legal.  I was a little disappointed that I wouldn’t be home.

As my friend Michael and I walked back from his apartment to my hotel, we saw that they were practicing the fireworks show and decided to go to the rooftop of my hotel to watch the show. I have been in Singapore a few times before about this same time of year.  Singapore’s National Day is on August 9th. I knew on previous visits that on weekends, they often practice the show in days leading up to the big day.  I guess that since Singapore is turning 50, they start practicing the show early.

The fireworks I saw were to Celebrate Singapore’s 50th birthday.  I didn’t get BBQ but I did get to see fireworks.

Fullerton Bay Hotel and Singapore

July 4th, 2015

I have passed by this hotel dozens of times on previous trips to Singapore. It is so elegant and on this trip, I am staying there.  My room looks right at my company’s office here in Singapore and my friend’s condo.  I arrived and by the time I checked into my room, it had started to rain – it rained real hard.  I drifted off to sleep for a few hours and then headed out to take on the day in Singapore.  I love Singapore! Singapore Cooking Class

IMG_1517July 4th, 2015

Michael and I signed up for a cooking class.  I found a list of places that offered cooking classes in Singapore and we decided on this one.  What drew Michael and I to it was the menu, Char Kway Teow, Singapore Chilli Crab and Onde Onde.  All three of the dishes are popular dishes in Singapore.  The class was given by Ruqxana in her home.  There were four other people in the class – a couple from Dallas who decided they wanted to come to Singapore for the food and 2 girls who live locally.

It was very nice and we learned how to cook the dishes and then enjoyed eating them.

The Taj Mahal and the Baby Taj Mahal.

Taj Mahal

Taj Mahal

July 3rd, 2015

I flew to Delhi the night before and arrived about midnight, got a few hours sleep before meeting our driver at 6:00 AM who took us to the Taj Mahal.  The ride between New Delhi was three and a half hours each way.  This meant it was a long day before me and my coworkers hopped on a red-eye to Singapore.

I would love to say great things about the Taj Mahal, I would love to say that I saw the Taj Mahal and it was worth the drive but I cannot.  Technically, I saw the Taj Mahal – well I saw the back of the Taj Mahal from across the river.  I didn’t see the front of it nor did I get a chance to go into it.

You see, when we planned this trip, one of my coworkers asked if there was anything I wanted to see in India.  Of course the Taj was the first thing came out of my mouth.   We made our plans and booked travel only to learn a few days prior to going to the Taj Mahal that the Taj Mahal isn’t open on Fridays.  Kind of a bummer to say the least and although I am glad I got to see the back of the Taj Mahal from a distance, I would have loved it a lot more if I had seen it from the front and was able to go inside!

Golaconda Fort

IMG_1401July 2nd, 2015

The Golaconda Fort was the capital of the Golaconda kingdom from the 14th-16th Centuries.  Wondering around the fort, I could only wonder what this looked like back in its day.  Overall, it is massive with structures from the bottom of the hill all the way up to the top.  How they built it is beyond me as well.  After visiting the fort, I did some reading up on it and found out that it was considered impenetrable. Eventually it was penetrated but only after a guard at the gate was compromised.

One of things that I found interesting was that in some places there were acoustic effects.  Close to the entry, there is an area where things echo back to you.  In one room, if you talked into a corner, you could hear it perfectly in the opposite corner.  Another thing I enjoyed seeing were the bats.  There were a few dark rooms and all you could hear were bast.  You could see some of them flying between the rooms. In the pictures, all you see are the red eyes. Continue reading
