Maui

October 22, 2018

We had booked a day of snorkeling and I was really looking forward to being out on a sailboat for the better part of the day.   I woke up and received an email saying that due to high surf, they were cancelling this morning’s snorkeling trips.   Although I was bummed, I hadn’t been sleeping well the past few nights, spending a low-key day might be good.  That is exactly what today was.

Besides resting, I went walking up and down the beach.   I stopped to take a picture of the resort I was staying in.   Overall nice but I was not happy about the adult pool being closed.

The Road to Hana

waianapanapa state park

October 21, 2018

Hana is a small town at the end of Maui.  It is an underdeveloped area on Maui considered by many as unspoiled paradise.  Although it is only 52 miles from Kahalui, the road to Hana is a narrow road with a lot of hair pin turns and one lane bridges.   It can take hours to get to it which is the reason that it probably remains isolated and underdeveloped.   Although Hana is beautiful, it is not about the destination as it is the road to Hana with gorgeous views of the island, dozens of waterfalls,  bamboo forests and plenty of small places to stop to along the way.

We had considered renting a car to make this journey but I quickly put that idea to rest, I had made that mistake many years ago when I was doing an installation at the Royal Lahaina Hotel.  I was working the Night Audit shift and when I got off at 7AM, I took the rental that my coworkers and I shared and headed out.  It was a beautiful but slow and at times white knuckled drive.   When I arrived in Hana I stopped and reconsidered my plan, why go back the same way?  Why not go around the other side of the Island which is actually shorter? Hawaii Food and Wine Festival – Spiked

October 20, 2018

We were well aware that there was a strike going on.  It was a dispute between a Japanese company and the unions.  It affected several hotels in Maui as well as the Moana Surfrider in Oahu.   We heard stories about it taking nine hours to check in and people were getting their own towels and linen, restaurants weren’t open and shuttle buses weren’t running.   Although I support the right to strike, I am not sure how I would feel about it impacting my vacation. Airlines charge you to change tickets and a lot of airfares are non-refundable.  It is a lose, lose situation.

The Hawaii Food and Wine Festival event was scheduled to be at the Sheraton Maui where they were striking.   We were told repeatedly that it must be cancelled.  I finally emailed the event coordinators who said that the event would take place. I was glad to hear it, these events are charitable events raising funds for the culinary schools in Hawaii.

Spiked! – 12 chefs and 4 mixologists.   I enjoyed it very much, not nearly as crowded as the ones on Oahu with a much for causal vibe to it.  Robert Irvine and Michele Bernstein were two names that I immediately recognized.   Robert joked about him having the best dish and after I had it, I had to agree, then again, there wasn’t anything that I didn’t like!   The night ended with a fireworks show!

Kaanapali

Kaanapali

October 20th, 2018

Sophon and I went walking in the morning.  I was trying to get my bearings.  We went walking along Kaanapali Beach when we stumbled across the Royal Lahaina.   I did a project there when I was doing property management system installations.  I remember who I was with and how we all went to a Luau.   I remembered that I took a free trolley down to Whaler’s village and sure enough that same trolley pulled up to the Royal Lahaina.  Sophon and I jumped on to it and a few minutes later, we were at the Whaler’s Village.

The Whaler’s village doesn’t look much different from what I remember.   It was filled with a lot of touristy shops.   we picked a few things up for the room and then headed back to the Westin.

Hawaii 2018!

Sunset over Kaanapali

October 18, 2018

This is my fifth year attending the Hawaii Food and Wine Festival (HFWF).  This year, I am going to attend a HFWF event in Maui in addition to the events in Oahu.   I am looking forward to seeing Maui, I haven’t been to Maui in a long time.  The last time was when I was installing Property Management Systems into hotels and timeshares.   During that time, spent a lot of time on the Hawaiian islands and I enjoyed every minute of it but it has been a while since I have been to Maui   It will be interesting to see how it has changed.

As with all trips to Hawaii, it starts with the 5 plus hours flight; a flight that I always find it hard to sleep on and I always arrive exhausted.   I was up at 5 AM to get to the Airport.  Hawaii is three hours behind me so I get in early but I it feels like I have had a long day that started extremely early.  y the time I get to the hotel, I find myself questioning what possessed me but after a nap and a stroll along the beach, I begin to feel as if I am in a tropical paradise.

Sophon and I arrived at the Westin Villa Resort where we are staying.   We were told that our room was not ready so we went to lunch.   Our room was ready before we finished lunch, we unpacked and waited for Cindy to arrive.    We rested and after Cindy arrived we walked down to Dukes for dinner.

While walking around, I remembered that when I was worked on Maui, it was called “The Honeymoon Island”.  It was called that because the majority of people visiting Maui were couples on their honeymoon.  My first reaction was that it has changed quite a bit, the vast majority of the visitors were families with children.  There were quite a few children there and I kept wondering why these kids weren’t in school?  This was no longer the honeymoon island.

No surprise that I was ready to go to bed by 9 PM!   Looking forward to the rest of my trip. Continue reading

Seattle, a better day

September 16th, 2018

Today was  much better compared to yesterday.  I had left this day open to do anything we wanted.   We got up early and went around the corner to have breakfast at Biscuit Bitch.  What a fun place that was!  We got there right before they opened, a few minutes later the person who opened the door had a big smile on her face while she said, “Good Morning Bitches!”.  We went in ordered breakfast and really enjoyed it.

Lately, I have been paying attention to the customer experience and how the work environment is noticed and felt by the customer.   This place is an example as to what we want to see as customers; everyone appeared to be having fun, there were smiles, there were sincere thank you(s).  Their attitude was contagious and I cannot imagine going there and not leaving there in a better mood.  A little sunshine, what a way to start the day!

Although it was raining, I wanted to do the Space Needle, when we passed by the Space Needle the day before, there was a long line so we skipped it.  I decided that despite the rain we were going to at least try it again.  We ubered it over and there wasn’t anyone in line, we walked right up to the elevator and went up.  The clouds parted and it stopped raining.   I again wondered if the lines we had seen the day before weren’t due to the large cruise ship parked off the pier.

I had no idea that it was built in 1961 for a world’s fair which was during the race for space.  As a nation, we were obsessed with beating Russia into space and to the moon.   It was also a time where we had a very stylized futuristic vision.  They had a great exhibit about the history of the Space Needle and a great gift shop with many retro race for space items.

Seattle

September 15, 2018

It was one of those mornings where I kept wondering if It was me or was I really having a bad morning.   I kept thinking that it was me, all me, nothing was going wrong, it was how I was perceiving things.  When I finally decided that it had been a bad morning and it wasn’t me, the day got better.   It started with the hop-on hop-off tour, we went to the stop closest to us, there was no sign indicating the stop, from the map, I couldn’t tell where exactly the stop was supposed to be.   I finally called the company and the girl said that they no longer stop and King station and then gave me instructions to the closed cafe they do stop.  Was this a bad joke?  There were a dozen or so interesting characters (homeless) standing outside the closed cafe.   We waited up the street!

We headed to the Pike Place Market and when we arrived it was packed. I hadn’t been there in ages, but I never remembered it like this, there was a line of at least 50 people at Starbucks, Pike’s Chowder, Piroshky and longer lines for Beechers and other places.   It was wall to wall people!  I noticed that there was a huge cruise ship named the Norwegian Pearl parked at the pier.   That would explain the tour groups.  After I was rammed by a few mothers using their baby carts to clear their paths, I decided it was too crowded and time to go. Amtrak Adventure Part II

Mt. Shasta

September 14th, 2018

I was up at 6 AM.  Actually, I was up much earlier, I finally got out of bed at 6 AM, I am not sure how much I had slept the night before but it wasn’t a much.  I was in and out of it the entire night.   Yes the clackity-clack put me to sleep but the screeching of the wheels or the sounds of another train passing in the opposite direction would wake me.  It was dark out and not much to look at. I was hoping to see the fires, but I never did and must have nodded off when we went through Redding

Breakfast:

I think we were the first ones to Breakfast, there was another guy who sat with us and we were pretty much the only table.  I noticed a lot of people bringing booze on board with them, perhaps they slept better than I did  or if they brought enough, were still sleeping it off.

The terrain had changed and had become very interesting.  Out the window, I could see a large mountain/volcano.  I wondered if it was Mt. Shasta, I asked the waitress and she said she wasn’t sure but I could be right.  Part of me wished that they announced the sites or gave us a guide of major sites.   Then again,  I am not always keen when i fly and a captain begins to announce every time there is something to see outside one side of the plane when I am trying to sleep. I pulled out my phone, checked google maps and saw that we were close to Mt. Shasta. Continue reading

Amtrak Starlight Coast Adventure

September 13th, 2018

Since I have heard about it, I have always wanted to take the Amtrak Starlight train from Los Angeles up the coast to Seattle, WA, a ride that takes close to a day and a half.  I have heard many great things about the views and how the Starlight train offers upgraded services including sleeper cars.  It sounded great but then again, Amtrak is no Orient Express and trains here in the states tend to be not as nice as they are in foreign countries.

Sophon and I purchased a Superliner Room which was a room with bunk beds that fold out and a bathroom.  We used Uber to get to Union and arrived with plenty of time to board our train.  It had been years since I had been to Union station and when I was there, I was there to catch a commuter train.  I wasn’t sure where to go and what to do.  I found the Amtrak desk and they were very nice in explaining where to go and how to check my bags.   By the time we were sitting in the lounge having coffee I was impressed as to how nice, friendly and helpful everyone had been.  I found myself comparing it to how the airlines make you feel when you fly. Chicago – Architecture Tour of Chicago

Friday, June 8th, 2018

We headed to the Navy Pier where we would find our boat to take the Architecture Tour.   My understanding is that the Navy Pier is one of the most visited places in Chicago, I am not sure why that is.  There are a couple of chain restaurants (Giordano’s and Bubba Gump’s) a Ferris wheel a children’s museum.  I kept thinking that I must be missing something, there isn’t a lot to do or see.

The Architecture tour was very interesting. I couldn’t believe how much content the tour guide delivered.  He talked from the moment we got on the boat until we pulled back up to the dock.   When I think of Chicago, I think of the Sear’s (now Willis) tower, the bridges and the “L” train.  I always assumed that Chicago, with its mobster background, was the inspiration for Gotham.  I also think of the river and the bridges.  What I didn’t realize was the diversity of architecture.   When I began to look at individual buildings, I began to realize just how much character a lot of the buildings have.
